PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Southern Avenue is seeking a passionate and dedicated Elementary ELA (English Language Arts) Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering engaging and effective instruction to students in kindergarten through 5th grade. The teacher will work to foster a love of reading, writing, and communication while supporting the development of literacy skills in all students. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Develop and implement engaging, age-appropriate lessons aligned with state standards in English Language Arts (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). Teach foundational reading skills, phonics, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies for early grades (K-2). Provide instruction in writing, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and storytelling for all grade levels (K-5). Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students, including providing accommodations for students with special needs. Create a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that promotes student engagement and social-emotional development. Manage student behavior and maintain discipline in accordance with school policies. Administer formal and informal assessments to monitor student progress in reading and writing skills. Regularly assess student learning through quizzes, projects, written assignments, and class discussions. Provide constructive feedback to students on their work and progress. Use data to inform instruction and make adjustments as needed to ensure student success. Participate in professional development opportunities and stay current on best practices in ELA instruction. Maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and behavior. Prepare and distribute report cards, newsletters, and other communications to parents as needed. Create and maintain a well-organized, visually appealing classroom environment that supports student learning. Develop and utilize a variety of instructional materials (e.g., books, digital resources) to enhance student engagement. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, English, or a related field (required). Valid state teaching certification in Elementary Education (K-5) or English Language Arts (preferred). Experience teaching elementary-aged students, with a strong background in ELA instruction (preferred). Knowledge of current teaching strategies, including differentiated instruction, and literacy intervention techniques. Strong communication, organizational and time management skills. Ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff. Passion for fostering a positive learning environment and promoting literacy. Desired Skills: Ability to integrate technology into instruction (e.g., educational apps, interactive whiteboards). Experience with formative and summative assessments. Familiarity with social-emotional learning (SEL) and its integration into daily lessons. Creativity in lesson planning and ability to make learning fun.
